Why Arts?
Why Choose a Bachelor of Arts?
Want to feel more confident about the future? A Bachelor of Arts (BA) is more relevant today than ever before. It will empower you to understand people and society on much deeper levels, giving you the skills and confidence to create your own path.
Employers want people who show initiative, are keen problem solvers, and can see the bigger picture. A BA is built to develop exactly that.
So... What is a BA?
Let's break the degree down into its two key areas...
Humanities
Here we study culture, history, language, literature, philosophy, performing arts and liberal arts.
Social Sciences
These are subjects that analyse how people interact in societies, like politics, sociology, international relations and anthropology.
Together, these areas give you the skills to shape the world; not just respond to it. That's the real value of a BA – it empowers you to understand people and society on much deeper levels, giving you the skills and confidence to create your own path.
Learn how to think, communicate and adapt – not just memorise content. You study ideas, people, culture and society, and learn how to:
- Ask better questions
- Explain your thinking clearly
- Understand different perspectives
That's why Arts graduates work across so many industries.
It trains how your brain works.
A BA helps you move beyond right-or-wrong answers. You learn to:
- Think critically instead of just accepting information
- Look at problems from different angles
- Come up with creative, practical solutions
These skills matter in jobs where problems aren't simple — which is most jobs.
Work well with people. Anywhere.
Arts builds strong communication and collaboration skills. You learn how to:
- Express ideas clearly
- Listen deeply
- Work with people from different cultures and backgrounds
This helps you avoid misunderstandings, build trust, and succeed in team-based work.
Skills that move with you.
A BA builds skills you can use in many roles, even as jobs change. Because you study different subjects and ways of thinking, you learn how to:
- Adapt quickly
- Learn new things faster
- Apply your skills in new situations
That's what makes Arts useful in a changing, tech-driven world. You don't need one clear career path yet. Arts helps you stay open to more than one future.
A BA Empowers Keen Problem Solvers.
Become someone who can handle whatever comes next. These are the skills that make you valuable in any room — and that AI simply doesn't have.

Flexibility & Choice
Not sure where your career is heading yet?
A BA opens the door to a wide range of career possibilities, giving you the space to explore your interests and refine your direction over time.
A BA lets you keep your options open:

You also have the flexibility to decide on your major in your first year or wait until second year after exploring different study areas.
Transferable skills & future-proof careers.
The advantage is clear: in an AI‑driven world where employers value human strengths, a Monash BA equips you to combine critical thinking, creativity and judgement with AI capability – so you don’t follow change, you lead it across 300+ industries.
Industry Experience
Become more employable.
Get work experience locally and abroad through overseas internships. It's one of the best ways to build a CV that stands out and to figure out the kind of work you actually want to do.
Build qualities like influence, empathy and perspective. These are the traits of a good leader.
Companies look for leadership qualities in employees. You may not think of yourself as a leader yet, but if you've been class captain, raised your hand to answer a question, or just helped a fellow student – that's leadership.
"What I loved about the Bachelor of Arts at Monash was that it is so career-focused. I did a two-month internship at Inclover Magazine... and four months at the Australian Centre for Education and Training."
